Seems you CAN teach an old dog new tricks!
Before I get into the details of Torbjörn’s changes, I have to say that I love Torbjörn and look forward to playing his character in any given situation. He is one of my go to characters for fun. I think Torbjörn is great for strategic play or a bit of fun with unexpected turret locations. Now I know everyone agrees & hopes that our wishes have been answered: Please Blizzard, give Torbjörn WALL CLIMB!
The Blizzard gods did not give Torbjörn wall climb. Boooooooo! However, according to Blizzard, “the goal of the rework is to increase his effectiveness in a wider range of situations while preserving the identity of the hero.” Players will not have to babysit a turret or run around collecting scraps, they can be more active and effective team players. Now that there is only a “DPS” category (replacing the old defense/offense DPS), Torbjörn should be viable and accepted for both attack or defense. To summarize the new abilities, Blizzard states that, “in order to make the hero more flexible in a wide variety of situations, we started by making the turret much easier to deploy and removed both the Armor Pack ability and scrap mechanics. Molten Core has changed into a new area denial ultimate ability that can be utilized more freely. Lastly, we’ve moved some of the old Molten Core functionality into a new ability— Overload—which replaces Armor Packs.” Check out these changes outlined below!
Torbjörn has a Rivet Gun as his primary fire weapon. Left-clicking shoots a slow, long-range rivet which can be used to snipe at far away targets. Projectile speed has been increased from 60 to 70 and reload time has been reduced from 2.2 to 2 seconds. Right-clicking shoots a more powerful, burst of short-range damage. This damage has been lowered from 150 to 125 and reload time has been reduced from 2.2 to 2 seconds. The spread pattern was adjusted and random spread reduced by 50%.
Have you ever had Torbjörn run at you swinging his Forge Hammer? Those people become my best friends. Not only can his Hammer repair his turret, it can also deal damage! I think all Torbjörn’s should only use their Hammer to defend themselves. The enemy becomes so baffled by the budget Reinhardt that they lay down their weapons to laugh.
Torbjörn’s new Molten Core Ultimate now powers up his claw arm for 6 seconds, instead of his turret. This ability allows Torbjörn to create 10 burning pools of molten slag that continuously damage any enemies standing in them for 130 damage (over the duration). The base damage increases to 190 against enemies who have armor (Bastion, Brigitte, D.Va, Orisa, Reinhardt, Torbjörn, Winston, Wrecking Ball). Very much like Wrecking Ball’s Minefield, Molten Core, can be used as a zoning ult to block or redirect the enemy. The pools need to be triggered quickly as you only have 6 seconds to create all 10. It would be a good idea to plan out where you want your ultimate to land ahead of time. As of yet, there is no way to clear the pools; enemies must wait or avoid them. I like this new ultimate and look forward to playing the floor is lava in quick play and arcade. It will be hilarious when 6 Torbjörn’s use Molten Core all at once in No Limits mode and chaos ensues.
Deploy Turret brings a whole new level of play to Torbjörn. It is now a quick, thrown projectile that automatically builds after 3 seconds. No longer do you have to stand there hammering. It is easy to destroy with the push of a button and move to a new location. There is however, only one level to this turret instead of three. It is the equivalent of a level 2 turret with 250 health. Should an enemy team ignore the turret, it will not explode if Torbjörn dies.
Replacing armor packs is Overload. This is a personal, temporary armor buff of 150 for Torbjörn. Much like Brigette’s Rally, Torbjörn has 30% increased movement speed with increased Hammer, Rivet Gun, and reload and attack speed. With a 5 second duration and a 12 second cooldown, Torbjörn will have a better chance of escaping dive and flank attacks.
Goodbye Armor Packs, I’ll miss the mini game of collecting Scraps as my team fought on the front lines. In my opinion, it may take some getting used to, but this rework will improve play for Torbjörn. You can expect to see Torbjörn players getting top eliminations and damage cards.
